Design Star...or maybe just a twinkle...

So did anyone else follow Design Star this season?

Hello....???

Is this thing on? *tap tap*

Yeah, I kinda feel like the show has not been great the last couple seasons. Don't get me wrong, you all know how much I *ADORE* Emily from last season, but honestly, I didn't really care about her designs until the last two episodes last year and this year...*sigh*...I just don't know how I feel about it.

If you haven't watched your Tivo'd Design Star results, STOP READING!

SPOILER ALERT!

So Meggy-poo won last night. You might know her as Meg Caswell. We're already friends and she now has the affectionate nickname of Meggy-poo.

She's cute right?

I have to say, she was probably one of my favorite, if not my very favorite, personalities this season. She is super energetic and excited and you can tell she really loves what she does. Pro.

Sometimes she stands like a linebacker about to take you out after a kick off. Legs apart, arms ready to tackle. Con.

She definitely took the judges advice and pulled off some good stuff during the show. Pro.

I don't think I was really "wowed" during the entire season. Con.

So I decided to look at her portfolio to find out how she got on the show in the first place:

Okay those were nice and I really like the orange couches, but this is what gave me hope of a new shining star on HGTV:

I don't know why, but the combination of rustic with refined, down home with sparkle just made me happy.

See? All smiley.

And that table is like the BOMB.  The detail work on the legs is killin' me...

I'm hoping to see more of that in Meggy-poo's future (c:

So spill your guts...what do you think about the new Design Star? Or maybe even just the show in general?

I'm absolutely, 100%, no question about it...

...on the fence.

If you are still on the fence about entering the KOKOON $100 GIVEAWAY...it's time to come to where the grass is greener and ENTER!!!

Okay, I don't love her. I like the room she did in the hotel but some of her other stuff was plain awful. I was rooting for Kellie the whole time. I liked her personality the best.

Wow! I let you spoil it for me, I wasn't into this season all that much but I too was hoping Kellie would win. Meg was ok, I'm really suprised she won. I do love the dining room she designed too but there wasn't a big wow factor in anything she did.
I haven't watched much of the show in general so I can't really give an opinion one or the other about the show. I watched a few episodes this season because everyone was raving about the show and I thought it was ok, definitely not as awesome as I hoped it would be. :) So there you have my half penny thoughts.

We don't get it here so I've only been following via MFAMB and from what I've seen of it...let's just say I'm not a fan. Agree on this portfolio though- like the couches and that chandy/table.

I might be biased because I haven't ever watched before this season. *GASP* I know, I know, what rock was I under? So that said, I loved the season but I wasn't in love with most of the people. I loved Mark, but don't think he was ready for a show. Couldn't stand Karl. How awkward was he? Meg was definitely my favorite and so I was glad she won. I think it's interesting that they aren't going with her Criminology show (which I thought was a little cheesy). Interested to see where they go with the "Great Rooms" show.

I quit watching 2 seasons back. The most I've seen of this season was the promos for the finale and I get the whole "linebacker stance" thing. That table is double rainbow awesome, though!!

I'm not sure that we get this in Canada, maybe? Though my Top Chef obsession is probably enough of this sort of genre. I drive my husband crazy with my incessant need to watch and then discuss every episode in depth.

I don't follow the show, so I can't really express my opinion on that. But I do love that wooden dining room table and the beautiful pendants in the kitchen. Hope you have a beautiful day!

I kept reading even though you posted "spoiler alert". I was hoping she won. Now I have to watch my recorded episode tonight.

hehe..."linebacker." Totally agreed. I do really like her though. I got a clear sense of her style vibe and liked it though I agree that some of her work lacked the "wow" factor. It's just tricky for shows like these to maintain momentum. Producers can't really predict what they're going to get out of these people.

So...i didn't watch Design Star, but I am SO TOTALLY IN LOVE with that photo you posted of the rustic/refined dining room. I'm a sucker for sparkly chandeliers AND rustic furniture. And that wallpaper? I die.

New to your blog and I'm loving it! Think I'll stick around a while. ;)

Hmm...yeah, shoulda been Karl. He had alot more to offer design-wise than Meg. I felt like her rooms are very...."trading spaces" whereas I was always interested to see how and what kind of architecture Karl was going to add to a room. Anyone can paint walls purple and trim green, but knowing how and where to add moldings is a true art. :) That's my 2 cents.

I haven't seen it..but I'm curious now!! I agree with you that the rustic table with the incredible leg work is my fave with that bustling chandelier above it!!

Could not agree more with everything you are saying. Definately liked her personality but her designs were lackluster. Her portfolio is much better though. What has happened to Design Star? I feel like this season was so lame and I kind of felt like I could do better designs than most of the peeps on the show and I ain't no designer!

I watched the first episode and got bored. My Favorite and My Best's recaps are more fun anyway. I actually kinda stopped watching tv altogether, until Real Housewives of Bev Hills started last week. They're my favorite.

Well I don't have HGTV in Peru so I didn't watch it. But I am a fan of the show.

thank you for putting me out of my misery. i had to shut it off last night 'cause i just couldn't bring myself to care long enough to get through the whole designer reunion thing.

I totally agree! I was never wow'd this season like I was hoping to be. There were episodes where I thought a specific designer did well but never thought one was strong or on top through out the whole show.
Meg was one of my faves, even though she totally bombed on a couple. I just never knew who was going to win - no front runner.
Although that kitchen and dining room are total winners!!!! That rustic table I need in my life stat!!!

I love her work! Not usually a fan of much color, the orange pops are perfect. I also love that dark nailhead couch. Gorg!

I didn't watch the show, but the rooms on this post are nice. Sorry i don't have a more insightful comment :)

Hmm, based on the portfolio... meh except for that last one. I completely agree with you analysis. Perfect mix of rustic and polished and glam!!

So I'm an idiot and read your post despite the spoiler alert. I still have the last 2 episodes unwatched in my DVR queue :(
But I just couldn't tear myself away from her portfolio pictures you shared! Love that kitchen.
As a side note, I would love to see a season of Design Star where the contestants had a realistic timeframe and budget to work with instead of being limited to pet store materials and 1 hour to finish a room.

Courtney {a thoughtful place} said...

Super on the fence. It doesn't really keep my attention anymore. And so unrealistic, right. Who says, "Ready go. . okay stop!" when you are designing a space. Okay, so I know it's for tv, but it does get a little wearing. Glad she won, though. She has some skills and she is very down to Earth!

Booooo! We don't get it here in the UK yet... might have to wait for it to come out! Love the orange sofas in the first pic!

It's so great to read what everyone has to say about this season. I too looked forward to seeing what each contestant would create each week. But I must say, I was definitely let down. I found myself losing interest mid way through each episode and retreating to bed before the winner was revealed. I like Meg as a person, her designs seem to lack much of a wow factor.
I think Mark should of won, he is inventive and thinks outside the box. He's a better designer than Meg, but this is a television program, lest we forget. I see great design careers awaiting a few of the contestants.

Cheers and Bravo to all~

I'm on the fence design-wise. Not wow'ed. But, I LOVE her personality. The line backer thing cracked me up. I just think she's adorable. So... yeah... we'll see how her show goes. But, I think she can do it.
